Burgos is a quiet, monumental university city and one of the cheapest in Spain: the Universidad de Burgos gathers around 9,000 students on two urban campuses, ten to twenty minutes on foot from the centre. Studying works well here, living costs little and the Cathedral is on your way to class. The Universidad de Burgos (UBU) is public and spreads its faculties over two campuses inside the city. San Amaro and Hospital del Rey, right on the Camino de Santiago, host Law, Economics and Business, Education, and Humanities and Communication, much of it in restored historic buildings. The Río Vena campus, to the east, brings together the Higher Polytechnic School and Sciences, with the labs and the engineering degrees. The Faculty of Health Sciences completes the offer with Nursing and Occupational Therapy. Around 9,000 students in total.
The centre and the university area of Parralillos and San Pedro de la Fuente are the easiest choice if you study at San Amaro or Hospital del Rey: everything on foot and next to the river. Gamonal and Capiscol, to the north-east, are large and very affordable districts, well connected by bus to both campuses. G-3 and Fuentecillas have newer flats, and Vadillos or San Pedro y San Felices sit halfway between the centre and Río Vena.
Burgos is one of the cheapest university cities in Spain. A room in a shared flat costs between 250 and 350 euros a month, and a place in a student residence between 450 and 750 depending on the room type and services. Add around 180-220 euros for food and very little for transport, since almost everything is done on foot. Budget a bit more for heating: winters here are genuinely cold.
Burgos is flat and very walkable: from the centre to either campus takes ten to twenty minutes on foot. The urban bus network covers Gamonal, Capiscol and G-3 well, and there is a cycle lane along the river Arlanzón that crosses the city end to end. The train and coach stations connect with Madrid, Bilbao and Valladolid in little more than two hours.
