Lugo is a small university city and one of the cheapest in Spain: the Campus Terra of the University of Santiago de Compostela gathers around 4,000 students here, including the country's leading Veterinary Medicine faculty. Life revolves around a Roman wall that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, everything is ten minutes on foot and it rains just enough to keep the city green. The USC Campus Terra in Lugo brings together some 4,000 students around Avenida de Madrid. Here you find the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the national benchmark, with its own veterinary hospital, and the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering, with Agricultural and Forestry Engineering. They are joined by Teacher Training, Sciences, Business Administration and Humanities. It is a compact, very green campus, closely tied to the Galician agri-food sector and full of fieldwork.
The university area, around Avenida de Madrid and As Gándaras, is the natural choice if you want to walk to class. The centre and the old town, inside the Roman wall, concentrate the bars, shops and all the atmosphere. A Milagrosa and O Carme are lively, well-connected districts; Recatelo and Fingoi are quieter and residential; A Piringalla and Garabolos sit a little further out and have the lowest prices in the city.
Lugo is one of the cheapest university cities in Spain. A room in a shared flat costs between 200 and 300 euros a month, and a place in a student residence between 400 and 650 depending on the room type and services. Add around 180-200 euros for food and practically nothing for transport, since almost everything is done on foot: with 550-700 euros a month you live well.
Lugo is a walking city: from the old town to campus takes about twenty minutes, and crossing the whole city barely more. The urban bus covers every district with cheap tickets and several lines run along Avenida de Madrid. The train and coach stations connect daily with Santiago, A Coruña, Ourense and Madrid, very handy for weekends back home.
