Lisbon is Portugal's great university city: tens of thousands of students spread between the University of Lisbon, the largest in the country, and NOVA University of Lisbon. Life here is bright and very international: viewpoints over the Tagus, yellow trams, neighbourhoods full of terraces and a student atmosphere you feel across the whole city. The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) is the largest in Portugal and spreads its faculties across the city: the Cidade Universitária, next to Campo Grande and Alvalade, brings together many of its faculties; the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), its major engineering school, has its historic campus in Alameda, and ISEG, the economics and management school, sits close to the centre. NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA) has its rectorate and several faculties in Campolide — such as NOVA FCSH and the NOVA Medical School — while Nova SBE is in Carcavelos, right by the sea. Nearby, in the Avenidas Novas, you'll also find ISCTE.
Each campus has its neighbourhoods. The Avenidas Novas, Saldanha and Areeiro are the university area par excellence, well connected and full of life; Arroios is one of the most multicultural areas with the best value for money; Alvalade and Campo Grande sit right next to the Cidade Universitária; Campolide is the most practical choice for NOVA, and Campo de Ourique offers a quiet, village-like atmosphere. If you're after lower prices, Marvila, a little further out, is one of the most affordable options.
Lisbon is pricier than other university cities in southern Europe, but still affordable compared with London or Paris. A student room costs around 350-650 euros a month depending on the area and type; add food and very cheap transport: the monthly navegante pass for students costs very little and covers metro, buses and trams. Sharing a flat and choosing neighbourhoods like Arroios or Marvila helps your budget stretch further.
Lisbon has a metro network with four lines (blue, yellow, green and red), plus Carris buses and trams — including the iconic number 28 — and GIRA public bikes. To reach Nova SBE in Carcavelos, the CP trains on the Cascais line are the fastest option. With the navegante pass, transport costs very little a month, and many central neighbourhoods can be covered on foot, though Lisbon's hills do make themselves felt.
