The University of Murcia (UMU) brings together some 30,000 students on two main campuses: Espinardo, to the north of the city, a large campus where most faculties are concentrated, and La Merced, the historic campus right in the city centre, surrounded by bars and student life. The Catholic University San Antonio (UCAM), a private institution, has its Los Jerónimos campus in Guadalupe, built around an old monastery, and is well known for its health and sports degrees. The tram connects the centre with both campuses.
The centre is the most sought-after area: close to the La Merced campus, with all the life of the city on your doorstep. Santa María de Gracia, to the north, is a quiet residential neighbourhood with the tram next door, perfect halfway between the centre and Espinardo. El Ranero is one of the cheapest options and sits conveniently on the way to the UMU campus; Espinardo puts the university a step away, and Guadalupe is the natural neighbourhood for UCAM students, right next to Los Jerónimos.
Murcia is one of the cheapest university cities in Spain. A student room costs around 200-350 euros a month depending on the area; add some 180-250 euros for food — fruit and vegetables are very cheap thanks to the Murcian huerta — and inexpensive transport: the tram and buses have very affordable youth fares.
