Oviedo is a green, compact and very easy-going university city: the Universidad de Oviedo, founded in 1608, spreads its faculties across El Cristo, El Milán and Llamaquique, all less than twenty minutes on foot from the centre. The cider houses of Calle Gascona set the mood and the Princess of Asturias Awards are the city's pride. The Universidad de Oviedo is one of the oldest in Spain and spreads its schools across the city: the El Cristo campus brings together Medicine, Nursing, Law, Economics and Business and Psychology; El Milán houses Humanities and Communication; Llamaquique holds Sciences and Geology; and the Historic Building, right in the centre, is still the face of the institution. Engineering degrees are taught on the Gijón and Mieres campuses, half an hour away by train or bus.
El Cristo and Buenavista are the natural area if you study on the health campus or Law: student flats, the hospital and shops close by. The centre and the old town concentrate the social life, with Calle Gascona a step away. La Argañosa and Teatinos are close to El Milán and Llamaquique; Ciudad Naranco, Pumarín and Vallobín are cheaper residential districts, and Montecerrao or La Corredoria work well if you want quiet and good bus links.
Oviedo is an affordable city to study in. A room in a shared flat normally costs between 250 and 380 euros a month depending on the district and whether bills are included, and a place in a student residence between 500 and 850 depending on the room type and services. Add around 180-220 euros for food and very little for transport, since the city is done almost entirely on foot.
Oviedo is a walking city: from the centre to El Cristo or El Milán takes fifteen to twenty minutes. The TUA urban bus covers every district with cheap single tickets and student passes, and Renfe commuter trains reach Gijón and Avilés in half an hour, very handy if you have classes on the Gijón or Mieres campuses. The train and coach station sits beside the centre.
