The Universidad de La Rioja (UR) brings all its faculties together on one campus in the south of the city, between Paseo del Prior and Avenida de la Paz: Sciences, Arts, Business, Law, the School of Engineering and Nursing. It is a mid-sized public university with small groups and close contact with lecturers, and a special strength in Oenology and Agri-food thanks to the Rioja region itself. UNIR, Spain's largest online university, has its head office in the city and attracts master's and postgraduate students.
The university area and Madre de Dios, right by the campus, are the natural choice if you want to walk to class. The centre and the old town concentrate the social life — Calle Laurel, Portales, the Espolón — and are fifteen minutes from campus. Cascajos and Lobete are quiet, slightly cheaper residential districts, and the west side (Valdegastea) is well connected by bus.
Logroño is one of the most affordable regional capitals in Spain to study in. A room in a shared flat usually costs between 250 and 350 euros a month, and a place in a student residence between 420 and 700 depending on the room type and services. Add around 180-220 euros for food and very little for transport, since almost everything is done on foot.
Logroño is a walking city: from the centre to campus takes a quarter of an hour. There is an urban bus network with lines passing the university, cycle lanes across most of the city, and a train and coach station in the centre with connections to Zaragoza, Bilbao, Pamplona and Madrid.
