Santander is a university city facing the sea: the Universidad de Cantabria gathers its faculties on the Las Llamas campus, along Avenida de los Castros, a ten-minute walk from the Sardinero beaches. In summer the UIMP fills the Magdalena Palace with courses and conferences. Life is calm, you cross the city end to end on foot, and the mild weather comes with a fair share of rain. The Universidad de Cantabria (UC) brings almost everything together on the Las Llamas campus, along Avenida de los Castros: Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Law, Economics and Business, Medicine and the schools of Civil Engineering and of Industrial Engineering and Telecommunications. The School of Nautical Studies sits next to the port, and there is a second campus in Torrelavega, half an hour away by train. In summer the UIMP takes over the Magdalena Palace with international courses that bring students from all over Europe.
Las Llamas and Cazoña are the most practical areas if you study at the UC: campus is a short walk away and student flats abound. El Sardinero and Valdenoja are quieter and a bit pricier, with the beach right there. General Dávila and Cuatro Caminos offer good prices and a direct bus to campus, while the centre, Puertochico and Castilla-Hermida concentrate the nightlife, the market and the bars, a quarter of an hour from class.
Santander is a mid-priced regional capital and clearly cheaper than Bilbao or San Sebastián. A room in a shared flat usually costs between 300 and 450 euros a month depending on the area, and a place in a student residence between 550 and 900 depending on the room type and the services included. Add around 200-250 euros for food and very little for transport: the urban bus pass is cheap and half the city is walkable.
Santander is a long, narrow city between the bay and El Sardinero, and much of it is done on foot. TUS buses cover every district with frequent lines climbing to campus along Avenida de los Castros, and Renfe commuter trains link with Torrelavega, El Astillero and the Besaya valley. Ferries to the United Kingdom leave from the port, and there are long-distance trains and coaches to Bilbao, Valladolid and Madrid.
