Leganés is the university town of southern Madrid: the Leganés campus of the Universidad Carlos III concentrates the School of Engineering and thousands of engineering students twenty minutes from the centre of the capital by Cercanías train. Living is far cheaper than in Madrid, with the same connections and the feel of a big but manageable city. On Lupo Rooms you find rooms verified one by one, with the final price upfront and a clear contract from day one.
The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has its engineering campus in Leganés: the Escuela Politécnica Superior, with degrees in Industrial, Aerospace, Biomedical, Computer, Telecommunications and Energy Engineering, plus its own laboratories, library and sports centre. UC3M is a young public university, highly ranked for employability and with a large share of teaching in English, which draws many international and Erasmus students. Its other campuses, Getafe (Social Sciences, Law and Humanities) and Madrid-Puerta de Toledo (postgraduate), are a few minutes away by train.
The Centro and San Nicasio are the natural choice: the campus is a short walk away and the Cercanías station and metro are next door. Zarzaquemada is the largest and most popular district, with plenty of shared flats at good prices, ten minutes on foot. El Carrascal and Leganés Norte are newer, quieter areas next to the Parquesur shopping centre and well served by Metrosur; Arroyo Culebro and Solagua, to the south, have modern flats and a bit more calm, a short bus ride away.
Leganés is one of the cheapest ways to study in Madrid. A room in a shared flat usually costs between 350 and 480 euros a month, well below the capital, and a place in a student residence between 550 and 850 depending on the room and services. Add around 200-250 euros for food and the young person's Abono Transporte, which for little more than 8 euros a month takes you all over the Madrid region.
The Leganés campus sits right by the Leganés Cercanías station (line C-5), which gets you to Atocha in about twenty minutes, and the Leganés Central stop on Metrosur (line 12), which links Getafe, Alcorcón, Móstoles and Fuenlabrada. Intercity buses run to Plaza Elíptica and Aluche, and within the town almost everything is done on foot or by bike along the cycle lanes of the avenues.
