The University of Barcelona (UB) is the largest in the city, with its historic building on Plaça Universitat and campuses in Pedralbes, Diagonal and Mundet. Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) spreads its campuses across Ciutadella, Poblenou and Barceloneta, and is known for its international profile. The Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) concentrates engineering and architecture at its North and South campuses in the Zona Universitària. And the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) has its main campus in Bellaterra, on the outskirts, well connected by train.
The most popular areas among students are the Eixample, central and very well connected; Gràcia, with a young, bohemian feel; and Ciutat Vella (Raval, Gòtic, Born), lively and right in the heart of the city. Barcelona is the most expensive of the three Spanish cities, but sharing a flat makes it affordable. A room costs around 450-750 euros a month depending on the area; add about 200-320 euros for food, 15-20 euros for transport with the youth T-jove pass, and utilities (sometimes included). Sharing is always the cheapest option and the most common among students.
Barcelona has one of the best transport networks in Spain: the TMB metro, FGC, tram, Rodalies and the Bicing public bikes cover the whole city. The T-jove pass, for under-31s, costs around 40 euros and gives unlimited travel in zone 1 for 90 days. In the centre, walking or cycling is perfectly viable.
