Pamplona is a compact, green university city: the Universidad de Navarra and the Universidad Pública de Navarra bring together more than 20,000 students on two neighbouring campuses in the south, fifteen minutes on foot from the centre. Life is good here, you cross the whole city walking or by bike, and in July the San Fermín festival turns everything upside down. The Universidad de Navarra, private and founded in 1952, occupies a tree-lined campus in the south of the city, beside the river Sadar and the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, with Medicine, Communication, Law, Economics, Pharmacy and Architecture among its best-known faculties, plus the Museo Universidad de Navarra. A step away, the Arrosadía campus is home to the Universidad Pública de Navarra (UPNA), with engineering, Economics and Business, Health Sciences and Human and Social Sciences.
Iturrama, Ermitagaña and Mendebaldea are the student districts par excellence: spacious flats, supermarkets and both campuses ten minutes away on foot. Azpilagaña and Milagrosa sit right by Arrosadía and come slightly cheaper. The Ensanche and the Casco Viejo concentrate services and nightlife; San Juan is quiet and well placed; Rochapea and Barañáin are the most affordable options, a quarter of an hour by villavesa, the city bus.
Pamplona costs more than other northern cities but is still affordable. A room in a shared flat costs between 300 and 450 euros a month depending on the district and whether bills are included, and a place in a student residence between 550 and 950 depending on the room type and services. Add around 200-250 euros for food and little for transport: almost everything is done on foot or by bike.
Pamplona is compact and you cross it on foot in half an hour. The villavesas, as the city buses are known, have lines stopping at both campuses and reaching Barañáin and the surrounding towns. There are cycle lanes across most of the city and along the river Arga. The bus station in the centre connects with Bilbao, San Sebastián, Zaragoza and Madrid, and Noáin airport is ten minutes away.
