Universidad de Cantabria is a public university with around 10,000 students and one main campus, Las Llamas, on Avenida de los Castros, between the park of the same name and the Sardinero beaches. The Universidad de Cantabria (UC) gathers on the Las Llamas campus, along Avenida de los Castros, the faculties of Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Law, Economics and Business and Medicine, plus the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Industrial Engineering and Telecommunications. The School of Nautical Studies remains next to the port, and there is a second campus in Torrelavega. In summer the UIMP takes over the Magdalena Palace with international courses and gatherings.
To live next to campus, Las Llamas and Cazoña are the natural choice: student flats, supermarkets and the park close by. El Sardinero and Valdenoja are ten minutes on foot, with the beach in front and slightly higher prices. General Dávila and Cuatro Caminos offer better value with a direct bus along Los Castros, and the centre and Puertochico concentrate the atmosphere, a quarter of an hour away.
Living near the UC is affordable by northern Spanish standards: a room in a shared flat is around 300-450 euros a month, and a place in a student residence between 550 and 900 with bills included. With food, transport and going out, a student manages on about 700-950 euros a month, well below Bilbao or San Sebastián.
The Las Llamas campus is walkable from half the city and several TUS lines climb Avenida de los Castros with stops at the faculties. The School of Nautical Studies sits by the port, right in the centre. For Torrelavega, Renfe commuter trains take half an hour, and ferries to the United Kingdom leave from the port.
