San Jorge University (USJ) was founded in 2005 and has made a name for itself in health sciences — pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing —, communication, architecture and sports sciences, with small groups and a practical approach that attracts many international students. Its whole campus sits in Villanueva de Gallego: faculties, sports facilities and green areas in a single precinct, connected daily with Zaragoza by bus.
Most USJ students live in Zaragoza and commute to campus daily. Actur and Parque Goya are the best-placed areas, at the north exit of the city with the fastest access to Villanueva de Gallego; the centre and the old town make up for the extra commute with all the city life on your doorstep, and Delicias is the cheapest alternative. Living in the city gives you student atmosphere, services and plans the campus surroundings simply can't offer.
Studying at the USJ while living in Zaragoza is affordable: a room costs between 230 and 350 euros a month depending on the neighbourhood, among the lowest of Spain's big cities. Add some 180-250 euros for food and the transport to campus, with buses linking Villanueva de Gallego with the city every day. Sharing a flat in Actur or the centre is the most common formula among USJ students.
The Villanueva de Gallego campus is about fifteen minutes from Zaragoza along the motorway and has bus lines connecting it with the city every day. From Actur and the northern area the access is fastest, and many students carpool up to campus. Within the city, the tram and urban buses move you easily between neighbourhoods, and with Bizi, the public bikes, day-to-day life is very cheap.
