The University of Salamanca (USAL) is a historic university woven into the city itself. Its old-town schools and faculties — beside the famous Plateresque façade and its frog — host philology, law and translation among centuries-old buildings, while the Miguel de Unamuno campus, southwest of the centre, gathers medicine, pharmacy, nursing, economics and law next to the university hospital. It's also the world capital of Spanish: its international courses bring thousands of foreign students to learn the language every year.
For the old-town faculties, the most convenient choice is the old town itself or its edges, with the Plaza Mayor and the libraries a step away. For the Miguel de Unamuno campus, the area around it and the Oeste district are the natural options — Van Dyck street and its pinchos sit halfway between them. Garrido, to the north, is the cheapest alternative, and since the city is compact, any area leaves the university within walking distance.
Living near USAL is very affordable: a room costs around 180-300 euros a month, with Garrido at the lower end and the old town a bit higher. Add around 180-250 euros for food and almost nothing for transport, because you walk to class. Sharing a flat in the Oeste district or near the Miguel de Unamuno campus is the cheapest formula for USAL students.
USAL is covered on foot: the old-town faculties are right in the centre and the Miguel de Unamuno campus is about fifteen minutes' walk from the Plaza Mayor. Urban buses link Garrido and the other neighbourhoods with both campuses on very cheap passes, and the train station connects Salamanca with Madrid in little over an hour and a half. For daily life, walking is the norm.
