The University of Murcia (UMU) is organised around two main campuses. Espinardo, to the north of the city, is the big one: a spacious campus where most faculties, the main library and the sports facilities are concentrated, with its own tram stop. La Merced, in the heart of the historic centre, is the urban campus with the most charm, surrounded by squares, bars and bookshops. It's a general university with plenty of student life, deeply woven into the city: much of Murcia's university atmosphere revolves around it.
The best area depends on your campus. For La Merced, the centre is the natural choice: you'll live a step from class with the whole city around you. For Espinardo you have two strategies: live in Espinardo itself or El Ranero, the closest and cheapest options, or stay in the centre or Santa María de Gracia and take the tram, which stops on campus. Santa María de Gracia is the perfect middle ground: quiet, affordable and with the tram at your door.
Living near the UMU costs what's typical in Murcia, which is little: a room is around 200-350 euros a month, cheaper in El Ranero or Espinardo and a bit pricier in the centre. Add some 180-250 euros for food — inexpensive thanks to the huerta — and very little for transport, with the youth fares on the tram and bus. Sharing a flat in the centre or Santa María de Gracia is the most common formula among UMU students.
The UMU campuses are very well connected. The tram links the centre with Espinardo in about twenty minutes, with a stop inside the campus itself, and city buses cover the remaining routes. La Merced doesn't even need transport: it sits in the heart of the centre and can be reached on foot from almost any neighbourhood. The city is flat, so bikes and scooters are fast, cheap alternatives for getting up to Espinardo.
