The Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI) organises its campus into four polos. Polo I, on Rua Marquês d'Ávila e Bolama, concentrates Engineering and Sciences; Polo II brings together Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine; Polo III hosts Arts and Letters, with Fashion Design and Cinema; and Polo IV, Social Sciences and Humanities. Several buildings are restored former wool factories, a legacy of the city's textile past and a case unique in Portugal.
To live near Polo I, the UBI area is the most practical: student flats, supermarkets and classes on foot. The Centro and Pelourinho are ten minutes away and concentrate cafés and atmosphere. Penedos Altos and Refúgio offer lower rents, and Boidobra sits next to the station. Keep the hills in mind: the public lifts help a lot day to day.

The four campuses are all inside the city and almost all are walkable, though the hills are real; public lifts and escalators help.
