The University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) is organised around two large campuses. The San Francisco campus, right in the centre next to Plaza Basilio Paraiso, concentrates medicine, law, sciences, humanities and education, with the historic Paraninfo building a step away. The Rio Ebro campus, in Actur north of the river, hosts the engineering and architecture schools and the faculty of economics and business, while veterinary science has its own campus to the east of the city. It's a general university, deeply woven into the life of the city, with a huge community of national and Erasmus students.
The best area depends on your campus. For San Francisco, the Universidad district and La Romareda are the natural choice, full of student flats; the centre and the old town are also within walking distance. For the Rio Ebro campus, Actur is the logical pick: modern, quiet and with the campus and the tram next door. Delicias is the cheapest alternative, well connected to both campuses, and those after atmosphere tend to head for La Madalena or the centre.
Living near UNIZAR costs what's typical in Zaragoza, which is little compared with other big capitals: a room is around 230-350 euros a month, more affordable in Delicias or San Jose and a bit pricier in the centre or the Universidad district. Add some 180-250 euros for food and very little for transport, with the youth pass and the public bikes. Sharing a flat in the Universidad district or Actur is the cheapest formula.
Moving between campuses is simple: the tram links Actur and the Rio Ebro campus with Gran Via and the area around the San Francisco campus in a single ride crossing the whole city. Urban buses complete the network, and with Bizi, the public bike scheme, any campus is a few minutes' pedalling away across a flat city. For getaways, Delicias station puts Madrid and Barcelona an hour and a half away by high-speed train.
