If you have just landed in Italy for your Erasmus 2026-2027, the clock is already ticking. You have exactly 8 working days to apply for your permesso di soggiorno.

We know the last thing you want to deal with on arrival is Italian bureaucracy, famously slow and tangled. Don't worry: in this guide we walk you through picking up the famous 'Kit Giallo' (kit postale) at the post office, how much the marca da bollo costs, and the exact documents your folder must contain for the 2026-2027 academic year.

No contract, no permesso?

Correct. Without a legally registered tenancy contract, your application will be rejected. Avoid scams and lock in your room for the 2026-2027 year.

1 The 8-day deadline

Italian law is strict. From the moment you set foot on Italian soil (or, if you transit through another Schengen country, from your arrival in Italy), you have 8 working days to walk into a Poste Italiane office and submit your permesso di soggiorno application for the 2026-2027 year.

Important!

If you stay in a hotel or tourist residence during your first days, the dichiarazione di presenza form they hand you counts as the start of your application. Keep a copy.

2 Picking up the Kit Giallo 2026

No appointment needed for this step. Walk into any post office that displays the "Sportello Amico" logo and ask for a "Kit per il Permesso di Soggiorno". You will receive a large white envelope with a yellow stripe (hence the nickname Kit Giallo).

Inside you will find Modulo 1 and Modulo 2. As a student, you only need to fill in Modulo 1. Use a black pen and BLOCK CAPITALS throughout.

3 Costs and the marca da bollo 2026-2027

Get your wallet ready. Before submitting the kit, you must buy a marca da bollo worth €16.00 at any tobacconist (tabaccheria). It is a duty stamp you stick onto Modulo 1.

  • Marca da bollo 16,00€
  • Kit postage (Assicurata) 30,00€
  • Electronic permit 30,46€
  • Approximate total ~76,46€

4 Your Questura appointment

When you submit the Kit at the post office, you receive a receipt (the famous "ricevuta") and a sheet with the date of your Questura appointment, where you'll have your fingerprints taken.

Do not lose the ricevuta! Until the physical card arrives, it is your legal proof of stay in Italy. It can take months, so guard it as if it were gold.

You have exactly 8 working days from the moment you set foot on Italian soil to go to a post office and apply for the permit. Italian law is strict about this deadline. If you have a layover in another Schengen country, the clock starts when you arrive in Italy, so don't leave it until the last minute.

What is the Kit Giallo and where do I get it?

It is the large white envelope with a yellow stripe containing the application forms for the permit. You don't need an appointment: go to any post office with the "Sportello Amico" logo and ask for a "Kit per il Permesso di Soggiorno". As a student, you only need to fill in Modulo 1, using a black pen and capital letters.

How much does the Permesso di Soggiorno cost?

Before handing in the kit, you need to buy a €16.00 Marca da Bollo, a stamp you can get at any tobacco shop (Tabaccheria) and stick onto Modulo 1. Add to that the cost of sending the kit by post (Assicurata) and the fee for the electronic permit, expenses worth planning for in your budget.

Do I need a rental contract for the Permesso di Soggiorno?

Yes. Without a legally registered rental contract, your application will not be accepted. That is why it is essential to secure a room with a legal contract before starting the process and to steer clear of scams. On Lupo Rooms, every room comes with a legal contract valid for your Permesso, with no surprises.

What is the ricevuta and why should I keep it?

When you hand in the Kit at the post office, you will be given a receipt, the famous "ricevuta", along with the date of your appointment at the Questura to have your fingerprints taken. Don't lose it: it is your legal proof of stay until you receive the physical card, which can take months. Treat it like gold.
