Universidad de Sevilla is one of the oldest universities in Spain, founded in the early 16th century, and the largest in Andalusia, with tens of thousands of students. The University of Seville (US) is an urban university spread across several campuses. Its historic seat, the Rectorate, occupies the old Royal Tobacco Factory next to Maria Luisa Park, hosting humanities and geography and history. The Reina Mercedes campus, to the south, concentrates sciences, computing and architecture; Ramon y Cajal, next to Nervion, brings together economics, business, law and labour sciences; the Isla de la Cartuja hosts the School of Engineering, and the Macarena campus is home to medicine and nursing next to the university hospital. It's a general university with an enormous student life, fully woven into the city.
The best area depends on your faculty. For Reina Mercedes, the neighbourhoods of Reina Mercedes and Heliopolis are the natural choice, packed with student flats; for Ramon y Cajal, Nervion, San Bernardo and La Buhaira are right next door; for the historic seat, the area around Prado de San Sebastian and the old town, and for Medicine, La Macarena, which is also one of the cheapest areas. Triana and the Alameda de Hercules are safe bets if atmosphere is your priority: well connected by bike to almost every campus.
Living near the US costs what's typical in Seville, which is little compared with other big university cities: a room is around 250-450 euros a month, more affordable in La Macarena and a bit pricier in the centre or Triana. Add some 180-250 euros for food and very little for transport, since almost everything is within cycling distance. Sharing a flat in Reina Mercedes or Nervion is the cheapest formula for US students.
The US campuses are very well connected. The city is flat, and with Sevici, the public bike scheme, you can reach Reina Mercedes, Ramon y Cajal or La Cartuja in just a few minutes from the student neighbourhoods. The Metrocentro tram and metro line 1 stop next to San Bernardo and Prado de San Sebastian, a short walk from the historic seat, and TUSSAM buses cover the remaining campuses. For most students, the bike is the fastest and cheapest option.
