favorite Living in Florence

Florence (Firenze) is small, intense and unmistakably a student city. To flatshare here is more than splitting rent: it is living between Renaissance frescoes, neighbourhood markets and golden-hour aperitivos in Santo Spirito. The good news is that the supply of shared rooms for Erasmus students is wide. The not-so-good: the market moves fast — understanding how it works before you land saves weeks and hundreds of euros.

A walkable city

Almost everything you need as a student sits inside the historic centre. From Santa Maria Novella station to the Duomo it is a 20-minute stroll across the city.

Oltrarno (Santo Spirito and San Frediano)

The favourite area for Erasmus students hunting an Oltrarno flatshare with character. Cross Ponte Vecchio and you step into a quieter Florence: artisan workshops, aperitivo bars on Piazza Santo Spirito and rents slightly kinder than the touristy core. Ideal if you want Italian roommates and a neighbourhood that is not built around tourists.

Historic centre (Duomo and San Lorenzo)

Sharing a flat steps away from the Duomo is expensive but hard to beat. You are 10 minutes on foot from any UniFi humanities faculty in the centre, with late-night cafés and university libraries next door. Expect daytime tourist noise and rents that climb fast in September.

UniFi student life

The University of Florence (UniFi) spreads its faculties across the city: Humanities near the Duomo, Economics in Novoli, Sciences in Sesto Fiorentino. Before locking in a room, double-check where you will actually have lectures most days — a UniFi flatshare close to your faculty saves you an hour of commuting daily.

nightlife Aperitivo and nightlife

Piazza Santo Spirito and Santa Croce

When your roommates say "andiamo a fare l'aperitivo", the right answer is yes. Santo Spirito gathers Erasmus crowds at sunset; Santa Croce and Sant'Ambrogio carry the night later. A spritz costs around £5-7 (roughly €6-8) — pricier than in other Italian cities, but it usually comes with a free aperitivo platter.
